I’ve been remote for years, and hiring remote team members almost as long. Like the hiring process, there are some must-haves.

If there’s one thing remote hiring teaches you, it’s this: technical skills will get someone through the door.  They won’t tell you if that person will thrive on your team.

And let’s be real, when the talent pipeline is thin, and work is piling up, it’s tempting to hire the resume. Don’t.

For me, building a remote-first firm means looking beyond credentials for the things that actually matter:

✅ Ownership over finger-pointing
✅ Proactive communication over going quiet
✅ Self-direction over constant hand-holding
✅ Cultural fit over checkbox qualifications

I wrote about exactly how I screen for these qualities and the tools and gut checks that help—in my latest article on Woodard.
